Description
Very few amateur yacht designers enter their first boat in the Fastnet Race, let alone believe they can win it.
But Dick Carter did, in 1965, and he beat all 151 other yachts–some of which were sailed by the most notable sailors of the day.
Four years later and no longer considered an "amateur" designer, he repeated the feat. During his brief but spectacular design career, his radical innovations created fast, comfortable, and popular boats.
Among his special creations was the 128-foot Vendredi Treize, which Jean-Yves Terlain single-handed in the 1972 OSTAR from Plymouth to Newport.
This is a celebratory look at a remarkable innovator.
