The Next Generation of Digital Navigation

S-100 Nautical Charts from the Australian & UK Hydrographic Offices

Modern maritime navigation is evolving rapidly. The next major step forward is the introduction of S-100 nautical data products, the new international standard for digital hydrographic information developed by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO).

Hydrographic offices worldwide—including the Australian Hydrographic Office (AHO) and the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO)—are now developing and releasing the first generation of S-100 products that will transform how mariners access and use navigational data.

What is S-100?

S-100 is the new universal hydrographic data model used to create and distribute digital marine information for navigation systems such as ECDIS. It replaces the long-standing S-57 chart standard, enabling much more flexible and powerful marine data services.

The S-100 framework allows multiple types of maritime information—such as charts, bathymetry, currents and tides—to be integrated together within modern navigation systems.

This means mariners can access richer and more dynamic navigational information than ever before.

Key S-100 Nautical Data Products

The S-100 framework includes several specialised products that work together to enhance maritime navigation:

S-101 – Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC)

S-101 – Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC)

The next generation of digital nautical charts, replacing current S-57 ENC charts used in ECDIS systems.
S-102 – Bathymetric Surface

S-102 – Bathymetric Surface

High-resolution seabed models that provide detailed depth information for improved situational awareness.
S-104 – Water Level Information

S-104 – Water Level Information

Real-time or predicted water level data to support safe navigation in coastal and port areas.
S-111 – Surface Currents

S-111 – Surface Currents

Dynamic information on ocean currents to assist route optimisation and voyage planning.

These products can be layered together within navigation systems to provide a more complete and accurate picture of the maritime environment.

Why S-100 Matters for Mariners

The introduction of S-100 products will bring several major improvements:

Enhanced Safety

More detailed hydrographic data improves situational
awareness and helps reduce navigational risk.

Integrated Maritime Data

Charts, tides, currents, and other marine information
can be displayed together within a single system.

Dynamic and Real-Time Information

Certain S-100 products allow dynamic updates such as
water levels or currents.

Future-Ready Navigation

S-100 supports emerging technologies such as digital
route exchange, smart ports, and autonomous vessels.

S-100 Implementation Timeline

Hydrographic offices are gradually introducing S-100 products over the coming years.

2026 onwards

Initial S-100 products begin to become available from hydrographic offices including AHO.

2026–2029

Transition period as navigation systems begin supporting S-100 standards.

From 2029

New ECDIS installations are expected to be compatible with S-100 standards.

During this transition, current ENC charts will continue to be supported while the industry moves towards the new standard.

S-100 Products from AHO and UKHO

Both the Australian Hydrographic Office and the UK Hydrographic Office are actively developing S-100 products and conducting international trials to ensure global compatibility and safe adoption.

These next-generation data products will gradually become available for selected regions before expanding worldwide.

Preparing for the Future of Marine Navigation

S-100 represents the future of digital navigation and maritime data services. As navigation technology continues to evolve, these new standards will enable safer, smarter and more efficient maritime operations.

For chart distributors, vessel operators and marine professionals, understanding S-100 and its benefits will be key to preparing for the next generation of electronic navigation.
