Because of its geographical location and unrivalled facilities Hobart’s harbour has seen, over the years, the arrival and departure of thousands of ships of every description – including convict transports and whalers, ships of discovery and research, deep sea sailing ships, cargo vessels, passenger liners and cruise ships, steam yachts, warships of all kinds, troop transports, royal yachts, oil tankers, ore carrers and container vessels… Established in 1858, the Marine Board of Hobart was largely responsible for creating the port that we know today. It was succeeded by Hobart Ports Corporation in 1997 and Tasmanian Ports Corporation (Tasports) in 2006, which brought all the island’s ports under the one administration. HB 612 pages
