Mariette and the Herreshoff Schooners

Here is the story of a remarkable steel schooner, one that holds pride of place among the “cathedrals of American yachting.” The schooner is Mariette, launched in 1916.
Mariette has had 17 owners since being launched, each showing great passion for the schooner, which was designed by the “Wizard of Bristol,” Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, and built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company of Bristol, Rhode Island.
In Part One of the book, numerous testimonies—including those of Lou Boudreau, Erik Pascoli, Tom Perkins, Tom Eaton, Chris Gartner, and Charlie Wroe—provide insight to how and why Mariette, approaching her 100th year since her launch, is still sailing today.
Part Two of the book relates the story of the rare Herreshoff-designed schooners—15 in all, with 9 of these built of steel—and includes contributions by Maynard Bray (who has also contributed the preface to the book), Llewellyn Howland III, John Lammerts van Bueren, and Luigi Lang.
This 534-page book contains more than 400 illustrations, including contemporary photographs by Nigel Pert, plans of Mariette redrawn by François Chevalier, and reproductions of original Herreshoff Manufacturing Company schooner plans. A specially created folder accompanies the book and contains 45 unique documents, including 35 previously unpublished Herreshoff Manufacturing Company schooner plans (construction, sail, accommodations) and two reproductions of oil paintings by artist Jamie Medlin.
The lines plans of Mariette redrawn by François Chevalier, which will be of interest to modelers, completes the set of documents. To write this book, author Jacques Taglang relied on various sources, including Claas van der Linde’s immense work, the Herreshoff Catalogue Raisonné.
