The Ly-ee-Moon disaster is one of the enduring mysteries of the sea.
The passenger steamer broke up on the night of 30th May 1886 after hitting a reef south of Eden on the far south coast of NSW.
Seventy one passengers and crew perished, fifteen all male survived.
The night was clear, there was a moderate ocean swell and a westerly wind. The Green Cape lighthouse beacon was flashing directly above the wreck site. Either the captain of the Ly-ee-Moon or the third officer who was in charge of the vessel at the time, lied about the circumstances of the wreck.
