Cross the Vatican Line

The story is based around a central character named Jake, a Port Fairy local. He is obsessed with discovering the fabled ‘Mahogany Ship’ said by some to be buried beneath the sand dunes between that town and Warrnambool. The modern story is also linked to the Portuguese voyage of discovery in 1521 that sailed down the east coast of Australia in search of the ‘Isles of Gold’ and seeking to intercept and sink Ferdinhand Magellan in command of a Spanish expedition seeking to exploit the Spice islands (Indonesia) at that time under the control of Portugal; thanks to the protection of the Treaty of Tordesillas (Vatican Line or Pope’s Line).
