Early in 2003, Adam Nicolson decided to leave his comfortable life at home and go for an adventure at sea. He set off along the Atlantic coasts of the British Isles from Cornwall to the Hebrides, before heading on to Orkney and a two hundred mile leap out into the winds of the North Atlantic. His journey was philosophical as well as physical. Running throughout the book is a dialogue between the attractions of home and away, the certainties of what you know and the seductions of what you don’t.
