Beacon to Beacon Guides- 16th Edition

Being Mindful of Depth and Clearance

If you’re looking to traverse the Moreton Bay area in Queensland between Brisbane, North Stradbroke Island, Moreton Island, and Bribrie Island, you’ll need a Beacon to Beacon guide from Boat Books.

This Moreton Bay mapbook will provide you with all the information you need to ensure a safe and informed time on the water, helping you navigate the various channels, docks, hazards, and more with confidence.

However, despite the best and most up-to-date information available being included in the guide, there are two things you should keep in mind when navigating the area.

Depth Countours Can Change

Although the depth contours for the area are recorded as accurately as possible in the Beacon to Beacon guide, the sheer breadth and scope of the guide mean that these sometimes become outdated.

Generally, you’re safe as long as you follow the well-maintained navigational channels marked by beacons and buoys. However, should you venture outside of these established routes, particularly following major weather events, it is strongly advised that you keep a lookout or use a depth sounder and travel slowly.

Be Vigilant Around Clearances

In the guide, clearances under overhead obstacles like bridges, cables, and pipelines are given at the highest astronomical tide. This is the maximum expected tidal level, which is given to help mariners account for the worst-case scenario of water levels when the clearance levels are at their tightest.

However, it should be noted that these clearance points are not always congruent with the deepest parts of the channel, so these areas should be navigated with caution.

Also, despite every effort being put into providing accurate depth and clearance measurements, weather events and other factors can lead to unexpected changes. It is also important to note that not every clearance object is recorded and that there may be certain items not reflected in the guide.

It is therefore highly recommended that a proper lookout be maintained to ensure that these areas are traversed safely.
